Development

In the facilities of the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization Demeter, the bulbs of the species Tulipa bakeri (Lilac Wonder) had a very small percentage of sprouting capacity in the field (25%), with a final number of plants per block ranging from 1-8 / 20 . The plants that sprouted remained in the stage of vegetative growth (development of a lanceolate leaf), without forming flowers. The plants completed their biological cycle (leaf drying) without flowering.

The bulbs of T. saxatilis had a high percentage of sprouting capacity in the field (90%), with a final number of plants per block ranging from 17-20 / 20. The plants, however, remained in the stage of vegetative growth (development of a lanceolate leaf), without forming flowers. The plants completed their biological cycle (leaf drying) without flowering.

T. clusiana bulbs had a high percentage of sprouting capacity in the field (84%), with a final number of plants per block ranging from 14-20 / 20. The plants developed 3-4 leaves. The beginning of flowering occurred in late March 2021. The plants formed 2-3 flowering stems, which bloomed successively. Specifically, the 1st wave of flowering was completed in mid-April and at the end of the same month the flowering was completed (2nd-3rd flower).

The bulbs of T. orphanidea had a high percentage of sprouting capacity in the field (91.5%), with a final number of plants per block ranging from 17-20 / 20. The plants developed 3-4 leaves. The beginning of flowering occurred in early April. The plants formed 3-4 flowering stems, which bloomed at the same time. The flowering was completed at the end of April.

The bulbs of T. australis had a high percentage of sprouting capacity in the field (94%), with a final number of plants per block ranging from 16-20 / 20. The plants developed 2-3 leaves. This species is in blossom very early in the lowlands, as its flowering began in early March and was completed at the end of the month. This species naturally grows in Greece at altitudes of 1000-2000 m above sea level, and blooms there in May and June. All the cultivated plants formed a flowering stem.
